The development of the natural gas reserve within the Marcellus Shale formation in Pennsylvania has created a “gold rush” like phenomenon and has resulted in oil and gas companies from across the country flocking to large portions of the Commonwealth. The Marcellus is a large and prolific area of shale gas extraction from the Marcellus Formation of Devonian age in the eastern United States. The shale play encompasses 104,000 square miles and stretches across Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and into eastern Ohio and western New York. Natural gas occurs within the Marcellus Shale in three ways: 1) within the pore spaces of the shale; 2) within vertical fractures (joints) that break through the shale; and, 3) adsorbed on mineral grains and organic material. Most of the recoverable gas is contained in the pore spaces. The Marcellus Shale, which extends from upstate New York south through much of Pennsylvania and virtually all West Virginia, is believed to hold enough natural gas to meet the entire energy needs of the United States for at least 20 years.

The price is inching up because of the Saudi-Russian oil price war. Most traders figure there will be less shale oil drilling in the U.S., and because of it, less associated natural gas production from places like the Permian (and Bakken). The Marcellus is an example of shale gas, natural gas trapped in low-permeability shale, and requires the well completion method of hydraulic fracturing to allow the gas to flow to the well bore. The surge in drilling activity in the Marcellus Shale since 2008 has generated both economic benefits and environmental concerns—and thus, considerable controversy.

Well, I think it's the fact that, quite frankly, we all have a lot at stake in this thing they call shale. But beyond that, this site is made up of individuals who have worked hard for that little yard we call home. The USGS publishes its oil and gas resource assessments on the Energy Resources Program web site as soon as they are completed, peer reviewed by scientists knowledgeable about the subject, and formatted for publication. Two geological reports on the Marcellus shale have been released and are available on the site. The USGS has no plans to
