The India National Stock Exchange is open 6.25 hours per day which is average. Most stock exchanges are open 25 to 35 hours per week with 5 days of trading per week. There are several exchanges that are only open 4 days per week due to low demand and few listed companies. Further, the Indian stock market also opens a special trading session during Diwali, the festival of light. This is known as ‘Mahurat Trading’. Its trading time is declared a few days before Diwali. However, generally, Mahurat Trading timing is in the evening. The continuous trading session will commence only after the pre open session ends. The two trading sessions, continuous and call auction (pre-open) sessions will not run concurrently. The block deal trading session (35 minutes) will start with the commencement of the continuous session. Market Timings. Trading in RDM segment takes place on all days of the week, except Saturdays and Sundays and holidays declared by the Exchange in advance (The holidays on the RDM segment shall be the same as those on the Equities segment). Normal session or Normal trading session or continuous trading session’s timing is from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. In this session you can buy and sell shares from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. It is the actual timing of stock market. Pre-opening session time is from 9 am to 9:15 am. It further has 3 slots. Pre- and post-market trading sessions allow investors to trade stocks between the hours of 4 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. during pre-market trading, and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the post-market session. A trading session is the primary trading hours for a given asset and locale. The typical session for U.S. stocks is the most clearly defined trading session. The working hours of the NYSE mark the most active period for trading within a 24-hour time period. Different markets may each have their own working hours.
