Tick Value - the smallest allowable increment of price movement for a contract. Margin Maintenance - the minimum amount of equity that must be maintained in a margin account. Point Value - a measure of one basis point change in the futures price. Futures on the major currencies generally have a contract size of 125,000 units and a tick value of $12.50. However, some contracts are different. For instance, the British pound has a standard contract size of 62,500 units, so the tick value and multiplier are $6.25. Futures markets typically have a tick size that is specific to the instrument. For instance, one of the most heavily traded futures contracts is the S&P 500 E-mini. Its tick size is 0.25, or $12.50. That means if, say, the March 2019 contract’s current price is $2,553 (as it was as of Jan 7, 2019), Currency futures only trade in one contract size, so traders must trade in multiples of that. As an example, buying a Euro FX contract means the trader is effectively holding 125,000 euros. In the actual forex market, a trader can trade in multiples of $1000, and can, therefore, fine-tune their position size to a much greater degree. One market isn't better than another, but one may suit a trader (and their account size) better than the other.
