Rare in the garden, Stock Doves nest in cavities of mature trees, feeding on seed, shoots, vegetable matter and insects often on farmland, clearings and woodland edges. Song/Call The Stock Doves song is quiet, low and mournful. Stock doves are similar in plumage and size to rock doves/feral pigeons. They are largely blue-grey with an attractive iridescent bottle green band on the back of the neck and a pink chest. In flight, they show black edges to the wing and two partial black bands near their back. Unlike rock doves/feral pigeons they do not have pale rumps. Stock Dove Both sexes: Blue-grey upperparts, pinkish breast, green neck and two black wing bars. At first glance a Stock Dove looks much like either a Wood Pigeon , which is much bigger, or a Feral Pigeon , which is slightly bigger, and is easily overlooked. A graceful, slender-tailed, small-headed dove that’s common across the continent. Mourning Doves perch on telephone wires and forage for seeds on the ground; their flight is fast and bullet straight. Its call is a distinctive series of deep, gruff, double "coos" which are unlike all other British pigeons. It is often confused with feral pigeons and juvenile Woodpigeons (without the white neck patch) but Stock Dove has very short wing bars. Stock Doves nest in holes, often in trees, hence the name as stock is the trunk of a tree. Therefore, "stock dove" means roughly "a dove which lives in hollow trees". Such hollow trees near human settlements would often be taken and used as wood stock for firewood, hence the name.
